Mayors' Ride Bios - Bob Kelley

1. Which Relay link do you want to ride?

Monterey to Santa Cruz

2. How you found us

As "Bicycle Advocate" representative for Velo Club Monterey, I was contacted by "NBG".

3. Why you want to do this ride

I will do almost anything to nurture bicycling wherever and whenever I can. The concept is great. Skots participation and courage is inspiring.

4. Tell us about your touring experience- if little or none, indicate many miles have you ridden over the last year:

Have done a lot of centuries and six double centuries. I did the Davis Double with my son Tim this year. He is a California Highway Patrolman and we last id it together in 1986. It was a great reunion to do it with him again this year.

5. Tell us about your bike

My main bike is an old Merlin, (small bottom bracket). My fun bike is a Kelly cyclo cross, (green from the tires through the frame and up the seat tube).

 6. Describe your training regimen

I ride every day. I run some,(did the Big Sur Marathon in 2003)and I kayak on Monterey Bay several times a week.

7. How are you making time for this

I am retired law enforcement, (Sacramento PD for 31 years). I have been involved with Adventures By the Bay in Pacific Grove for 8 years and oversee the shop at Lovers Point. I am a licensed P.I. and do some work therein. I have the ability and desire to drop everything for a good bike ride.

8. What are your fears about doing this ride

"What,...me worry?" .

9. Do you have any special skills that you feel would benefit the Mayors' Ride?

First aid card, CPR card, and a Leatherman tool. I can do up to and including brain surgery on the route. Oh,.. I am also packing an "alien tool". I can rebuild a bike. I am working on getting my Tig welder more portable so I can take that along too.

10. Do you have any personal contacts that you feel could help the National Bicycle Greenway or the Mayors' Ride? If so, please list them here:

Frank Knight,......Adventures by the Sea.

11. If you are involved with other non-profit organizations, please tell us about them:

My household is a "non-profit org".

12. Anything else you'd like to share with us?

This country is "hooked on oil". Bicycling is one of the best solutions.

Greenway design and construction firms that specialize in bicycle trails will emerge as the Greenway program unfolds. Since some parts of the Greenway will be tastefully designed in a linear, park-like setting, service crews will maintain the landscaping, signage, rest areas and information kiosks that will border these important arterials.
