Mayors' Ride Bios - David Huggins-Daines

Which relay link(s) are you interested in?

Pittsburgh to Columbus

How did you find out about NBG/Mayors' Ride?

I did it last year - I found out about it from Bike Pittsburgh and WPFI (now Venture Outdoors) newsletters.

Why do you want to do this ride?

We need to get the message out that travelling by bicycle is fun, feasible, and (environmentally) friendly! Also, it's important to have safe trails and routes that will encourage more people to get out and do it.

Tell us about your touring experience- if little or none, indicate how many miles have you ridden over the last year:

Lots of self-supported touring over the last few years. Most recently, last fall, I rode from Pittsburgh to West Branch, Iowa for my high school's homecoming/reunion day. I've been too busy riding brevets this year to do a lot of self-supported touring. I rode about 3700 miles last year.

Tell us about your bike:

I have four. They are all red, two of them are "candy-apple" red, the other two are metallic burgundy. Two of them have 559mm wheels (26") and the other two have 622mm wheels (700c). One has a fixed (42x16) gear, one has 21 speeds, and the other two have 27 speeds. Depending on whether I end up riding to Columbus in one day or four, I'll either take my randonneuring bike (1990 Bianchi Volpe with Schmidt SON generator and Carradice saddlebag) or my touring bike (TET custom loaded touring bike with racks and panniers).

Please describe your training regimen:

I try to ride at least 10 miles every day, usually going to shop or work or school. Then I like to ride 80-120 miles in a day once a week or so. My schedule is flexible right now so it's not always on weekends...

How are you making time for this ride?

I'm taking a leave of absence this summer before going to grad school. This has given me lots of time to ride my bikes and work on bike advocacy, which is great.

What are your fears about doing this ride?

The usual ones about getting attacked by dogs, trucks, and pavement. Also losing track of fellow riders ... I'm not the best at riding in a group of people with different riding styles.

Do you have any special skills that you feel would benefit the Mayors' Ride?

I'm good with maps and, of course, I've done this segment of the ride before a number of times.

If you are involved with other non-profit organizations, please tell us about them:

Bike Pittsburgh - urban cycling advocacy in the Pittsburgh area. We run a bicycle recycling program, arrange to have bike racks installed in parking garages and businesses, and mobilize cyclists to take part in local urban and transportation planning meetings.
