Mayors' Ride Bios - David Huggins-Daines

I heard about the Mayor's Ride from a local bike group and I'm very interested in riding the segment of it that goes by where I live, since it actually meshes nicely with my touring plans for this year.

Which Relay link do you want to ride?
Pittsburgh, PA to Columbus, OH

How you found us
Through a Bike Pittsburgh (http://www.bike-pgh.org/) newsletter.

Why you want to do this ride
Well, it seems like something worth supporting, and I've also ridden to Columbus before, so I could help out with the routing. It also seems like a good excuse to see some of the stuff I missed the first time around.

Your touring experience
(All these rides were self-supported unless otherwise noted)
2002:
- Pittsburgh - Columbus - Athens - Marietta - Pittsburgh
- Several short tours in the Laurel Highlands
- Pittsburgh - Ottawa - Toronto - Buffalo - Pittsburgh
1994:
- Minneapolis - Chicago - Detroit - Toronto - Ottawa
1990-1993:
- "Silver Triangle" in British Columbia (around Vernon)
- Jasper to Banff on the Icefields Parkway (supported)
- Some short tours around Calgary, Alberta
- Two week-long tours in south-western Wisconsin

Tell us about your bike
2000 Cannondale T800 touring, 27 speed, front and rear racks, fenders, etc.

Describe your training regimen
I don't train. I just ride for fun and transportation all the time, and I've never had any problems doing long tours (at least after the first day or two). I'm not interested in going fast, though.

How many miles do you ride a year
I did about 4300 miles in 2002, and around 1000 miles a year before that. I just got back into touring after a long hiatus, hence the jump.

Are you car free or Interested
Yes. Car-free my whole life. For a long time, I relied heavily on buses and taxis, but now I'm biking a lot more, probably because I'm living in a city with substandard public transportation (it goes everywhere, but it's confusing, expensive, and slow). I'd really prefer to walk everywhere, if I only had time...

How are you making time for this
I should be able to either take vacation time or shift around my work schedule (which is pretty flexible). I hope we're not planning to take a whole week to go to Columbus, though, because I probably want to ride back as well.

How many miles do you plan to ride in 2003
I hope to do another 5000 or so in 2003, maybe more. I'd like to do another major tour in the fall, possibly to New England and eastern Canada.

What are your fears about doing this ride
The roads in West Virginia are a bit scary, but it's only five miles wide where we'll be crossing. I also hope it doesn't rain all the time.

Do you have any special skills
Well, I'm pretty good with maps. I also know the local roads well.

Affiliated bike club eMails
No... I can't deal with that much mail these days.

What other activities do you do
I help run an independent music venue. I've been known to play guitar, brew beer, and write fiction now and then. I plan to spend a lot of time in the garden at my new house.
