Mayors' Ride Bios - Jason Reser

Which Relay link do you want to ride?

Knoxville, TN to Newport, KY, arriving 5/9/5
Newport, KY to Cincinnati, OH departing/arriving 5/31/5

How you found us

I was made aware of the Mayors' Ride from Jeff, my brother, who designed the Mayors' Ride graphic. He and I rode in the 2003 Mayors' Ride from Chicago to Des Moines. It was exhilarating as I saw animals which I had not previously seen in the wild. We had a great time pushing ourselves to "make it to the next city" or park or campground or whatever point to which we decided to ride.

Why you want to do this ride

I want to do this ride to for the scenery, experience and to create awareness for the bicycle greenway cause. I would like to support this obtainable dream. My own area, Cincinnati, is relatively behind on bicycle trails. Perhaps with a little publicity, awareness would be raised in my area and more people will see trails as desirable, and bicycles as a worthy mode of transportation. One job that I will tackle head-on in my region is the lack of younger riders. I will start a younger "cluster" ride for the Cincinnati Cycle Club for riders that may normally feel awkward with the normal mix of Cycle Club riders.

Your touring experience

As above, I have ridden in the 2003 Mayors' Ride from Chicago to Des Moines, many miles of which were on gravel paths along old canals. I have also done some international touring, riding with Jeff. For example, he and I have been on a tour across Germany and the Czech Republic. Some days we did almost 100 miles on 1.9 inch knobbies tires and carrying luggage. While we didn't do as much off road riding as we expected, it was still an excellent trip.

Tell us about your bike

I will likely ride my Colnago Dream HP with a trailer attached, although I might change to a different bike before the ride if I am able to find gravel roads or trails to ride instead of pure pavement

Describe your training regimen
After training and racing mountain bikes at expert level for years, I lost the appetite for straight-up "training". I still train for Cat 3 road racing, but I now ride with friends on group rides. In the winter I do rollers and trainer riding. In the summer I usually log 200+ miles a week.

How many miles do your ride a year
Enough to wear out at least two sets of tires and chains.

Are you car free or Interested

My environment does not currently condone bike riding. I do believe that public transportation and bicycles are the best transportation for an urban environment, and I hope the masses will begin to realize this.

How are you making time for this

My colleages at the bike shop will be doing a glorious job, perhaps even better than usual with me gone.

Do you have any special skills

Besides things directly germane to this ride, I have extensive knowledge of the interweb and programming

Do you have any helpful friends for us

I do have access to a publicist that works for the city my shop is in, and I will see if we can get some local media exposure. I also advertise in a few local papers who would love to do an article on the ride. I also know the Mayor of Newport, Kentucky and an Alternative Transportation Coordinator for the City of Cincinnati(bicycles)

What other activities do you do

Water and Snow Skiing, Kayaking, Rafting, Computer programming, member of local associations.
